Valeriana officinalis
Valerian root originates from Eastern Europe. Its name is derived from the Latin word valere, meaning “to strengthen.” It has long been used in traditional medicine, mainly for treating anxiety and insomnia.
Valerian is non-addictive, does not require increasing the dose, does not impair sleep quality, and does not cause morning fatigue or grogginess (Bent, 2006).
Its sedative effects are mainly attributed to valeric acid (Gharib, 2015) and also to other compounds like valerenic acid, which interacts with GABA A receptors similarly to benzodiazepines (Murphy, 2010).
Valerian extract also affects adenosine A1 receptors (Muller, 2002) and acts on serotonin and norepinephrine receptors, reducing the body’s stress response (Jung, 2014).
Studies confirm neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of valerian – it may help alleviate symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.
CBD
