Catnip is native to regions stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia. It belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and resembles mint in appearance. In English, it is commonly known as catnip or cat mint.

Main Active Compounds in Catnip

The primary active component is nepetalactone – a sesquiterpenoid consisting of 15 carbon atoms. When catnip is steam-distilled, the essential oil may contain up to 80% nepetalactone.^{Suschke, 2007}

In addition to nepetalactone, catnip essential oil contains various terpenoids, particularly beta-caryophyllene – a compound with proven anti-inflammatory and cannabinoid-like effects, also commonly found in cannabis.

Catnip also contains a wide range of flavonoids, phenolic acids, and plant steroids, which likely contribute to its notable antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus.^{Bisht, 2010}
